if you go with the puzzle idea, you can buy puzzles cheap at Goodwill and yardsales--even cheaper if they are missing a few pieces.

How about using what your school already has?

group together things in "collages"--- like so:

a trumpet -- with a sheet of music, some paintbrushes or sketching pencils, and a theater mask stuffed inside the large opening.
